October 30, 2008 - Five prominent scientists and members of
the President’s Council on Bioethics warn Michigan voters against
Proposal 2.
October 29, 2008 - In a stunning revelation to Nature Magazine,
Susan O’Shea, the Director of the Michigan Center for Human Embryonic
Stem Cell Research in Ann Arbor, admits that passing Proposal 2
will not lead to more stem cell research, only taxpayer dollars
will produce new stem cell lines.
October 17, 2008 - After reading the 100-word ballot language,
which every voter will see when they enter the voting booth, only
36% of likely voters indicated they would vote Yes and 44% indicated
they would vote No.
October 14, 2008 - A new TV ad launched by Michigan Citizens
Against Unrestricted Science and Experimentation (MiCAUSE) raises
concerns about mixing human and non-human species during embryonic
stem cell research.
October 10, 2008 - Ten years ago, President Bill Clinton raised
“serious ethical, medical, and legal concerns” with embryonic stem
cell experimentation. His letter points out the need for state regulation.
October 3, 2008 - MiCAUSE highlights some of the conclusions
of the Citizens Research Council report on Proposal 2008-02. Proposal
2 would remove the state’s authority to regulate stem cell research
for any reason. Proposal 2 goes too far.
September 25, 2008 - Reports filed with the Michigan Secretary
of State show that the proponents of Proposal 2 have spent more
than $2 million dollars since the formation of their committee.
One source, the Alfred Taubman Trust, has provided nearly one half
of the budget.
September 23, 2008 - MiCAUSE launches its first statewide television
ad to inform the public that Proposal 2 backers are already calling
for public funding to expand human embryonic stem cell research
in Michigan.
August 21, 2008 - Senate
Majority Leader and House Speaker oppose Proposal 2 as part of a
bi-partisan effort to defeat the flawed proposition that would allow
unrestricted research on human embryos.
August 11, 2008 -MiCAUSE
announces co-chairs in the effort to defeat the statewide human
embryo research initiative. Tom George and Patricia A. McDonald
will serve as co-chairs of the MiCAUSE campaign.
July 30, 2008 - MiCAUSE
urges voters not to be deceived in response to a Board of State
Canvassers meeting on the November Ballot Proposals. This proposal
will allow unregulated and unrestricted experimentation on human
embryos.
July 7, 2008 - Statement regarding
the filing of signatures to put the human embryo stem cell issue
on the November statewide ballot.
