Men who are dressed in formal suits who knock on everyone’s door from time to time, asking for donation money usually have one clear purpose in mind: that of raising cash for a certain cause. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to give away money to charity, and often times these people leave empty-handed. In order to prevent that from happening, we should all learn that helping those in needs does not necessarily need to refer to making a financial donation. It is not all about the money, after all.

People are less willing to give away what they have then they used to. This is not consequence of a more mean society, or a society that simply has no time for charities, but one that simply doesn’t have the level of disposable income that it used to (excusing the numerous chief executives of top City firms who enjoy consistent year-on-year pay rises). Charity workers usually need to be qualified with primary courses or degrees in order to be adequately trained. In the 21^st century, charity is not just about asking people for spare cash and using provoking advertisements, it is about understanding the value of money and how people can learn how a dispensable amount of cash from a British citizen can make an indispensable difference to a disadvantaged human being from a completely different way of life.

In my time working for a franking machine hire company in London, I came across a youth charity called MyGeneration. It has a stated purpose to “break the cycle of poverty, crime and ill-health in struggling communities, through people-centred sustainable change.”

One of the projects they are engaged in caught my eye and I’d like to share with you the work that the group is doing – hopefully inspiring you in your youth groups to take up similar initiatives.

As part of the Delivering Race Equality Action Plan, the Kensington & Chelsea Primary Care Trust (PCT) provided funding to MyGeneration to set up the 4minds Project, a new initiative aiming to improve mental health care and treatment to people from the Black and Minority Ethnic Communities.

The Project employs three community development workers, a community researcher and team administrator whose work objectives include tackling stigma and raising awareness of mental health, encouraging the active participation and involvement of BME Communities in mental health policy and implementation, and promoting joint working and education within the statutory services and community & voluntary services

What this all means on the ground is that the community development workers will be producing information for local people so that they can get a better understanding of mental health, the symptoms, the causes and the treatments that are available. Information is being made available about how to access this help and staff can assist people who ask for specific advice. In addition, the staff will provide support and information on how to keep emotionally healthy and what to do if you’re worried about yourself, a friend or relative.

This is just one of many projects being conducted by MyGeneration, a group which has been inspirational in turning around the lives of socially excluded youths in London. Their work should be an example to others.

While a lot of organizations make a difference, there are a few who can claim to tug the heartstrings of people. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is one such. Its objective is to grant the wish of children suffering from life threatening medical conditions bringing strength, hope and joy to the child. Today it has grown to be the largest wish granting organization in the world with funds coming in from corporate and well-wishers from people from every sphere of life. The organization strives to make the wish of such children from every background come true; be it the children of agricultural contractors or working professionals.

The organisation works with the child’s treating physician to determine his or her eligibility along with the medical criteria that the organization has established across the globe. These wishes fall into one of the four categories of ‘to go’, ‘to meet’, ‘to be'and ‘to have'that the child will have.

Contrary to the commonly held perception, not all children have a terminal condition and many go on to lead happy and healthy lives. But it is often the terminally ill and whose one wish before life is snuffed out that touches a cord in us. Quite often in such cases, the thought of the wish coming true is what motivates the child to hang on to life until it is fulfilled. It could be meeting Superman or Barbie, or a trip to Disneyland and in some poignant cases, having something very mundane that you and I would never cast a thought to. Like in the case of 12 year old Jordan who wanted to give away all his toys to go to the homeless children in his community. Or 9 year old Ben, suffering from cancer, who wanted to design a video game that would relieve some of the pain and stress involved with a treatment. The sense of fulfilment that the organization brings to a child is indescribable.

Charity stems from the desire of people to help those more unfortunate than themselves. This help involves giving; money, services, and spending time to name a few. Since it is something that is freely given, there are many who are willing to benefit from this noble human sentiment. They come in all shapes and sizes; some in tattered clothes to show off their poverty and hence gain eligibility while others in natty linen suits that imply theirs is a voice that is well worth the time spent listening to. All come with the singular intent of getting through to the generosity of others using their acting skills, or to put it bluntly, their con skills.

Now Bill Gates has donated a chunk of his fabulous wealth to charity. That’s a lot of money. Even a tiny fraction of all that money works out to a big amount. The intention of such a donation is to give back to society and the less privileged a fair chance in life. If not allowed to, the hurdles can themselves prevent the intended benefit. No doubt con artists in every guise are already hatching plans to beat each other and get to that before it passes on to the intended recipients.

The only way to prevent it falling into the wrong hands is to keep a strict vigil on the spending, finding out the background of the organisation doing the actual work and ensuring there is accountability and results wherever the money has been spent. Not an easy task when you have to make sure that every dollar has been well spent. While making money seems easy here, giving it away can be a challenge. It is not enough to donate, it is also important to ensure that you make the maximum difference by you what you give out. Only then will we see faster results.

The idea of giving to charity is a noble one. In fact, it promotes a feel good factor in the mind of the giver. And rightly too, as it is our duty to help the less privileged than ourselves. This desire stems from a deep rooted feeling of wanting to help others less fortunate than ourselves without getting anything in return. Though money is the primary thing that is given out, it can also be other things like clothes, food or for that matter other everyday things, like school coat hooks.

This desire to help our fellow beings is one that is wired into our very being. It’s just that greed and selfishness often overshadows this. When a billionaire like Bill Gates decides to part with a chunk of his wealth, he is responding to this desire with no strings attached. While not all can part with money of a similarly large scale, we can all contribute in our small ways. It could also be a service where we contribute to a cause with the abilities that we have been blessed with. Even small things go a long way. Only a person who does not have something very basic will truly appreciate its value. Most of us take what we have naturally and seldom pause to appreciate its worth.

Giving is complete only when given without desiring anything in return or any ulterior motives. It should be given to help a fellow human being, wholeheartedly with no strings attached. That is what makes giving a very fulfilling act. And it would also do well to ensure what is given reaches a deserving person. While there are a lot of people willing to give, there are also an equal, if not more, number of people waiting for an opportunity to siphon off what they can lay their hands on. Fortunately, this is an exception rather than a norm and the deserving get what is meant for them.

If you are looking for a new charity to support, then what could be better than supporting a charity that sets out to end the suffering, abuse, poor treatment and murder of millions each year? In my opinion, that seems like just about the best mission plan possible. The reason that some people do not agree is because they are trying to prevent the pain, suffering and deaths of animals, and not humans.

Animal Equality is a charity that is very proactive in the animal rights movement, and is doing some excellent work every day. The problem that they are currently facing in places such as Spain, which is where the charity originates from, is that they are being termed as ‘eco terrorists'by the law in some cases for non destructive actions that have been taken by some who seek to end the bad treatment of animals. Why do people think that this behaviour is acceptable? The worst thing is that many laws that are in place allow judges to deem people as terrorists for carrying out acts of compassion. Walking into an open mink farm and releasing animals that are being locked in tiny cages, malnourished, beaten, and then killed, is termed as terrorism by the courts and media. If the same thing were to be going on with humans, in a building somewhere and a group of people showed the same compassion to end the suffering and freed them, they would be crowned as heroes.

We all need to think about what we see as important in this world, and stand up and support those that are trying to make a positive difference to the world and those creatures in it. The same goes for environmental issues, and we need to support eco companies that are trying to make positive changes in the way we produce and consume goods. Thankfully there are some companies such as Enigin Scam Busters that are trying to make a difference in this area, and prevent companies from operating under false pretences in the ‘green'industry.

There is no doubt that if you would see some of the poorest people living in India and China, you will start wondering if these two countries are really growingly economically at an unbelievable rate. It’s true that both of these countries are two of the biggest economies in the world, but difference of wealth between the rich and the poor is also unbelievable in these countries. In China if you search hard you will even find the slave system still flourishing. Greed has taken over and people are doing everything they can to fill their pockets as much as possible. The most affected in these societies are the women and the children. Yesterday when I went for swimming, I found that the changing room benches were not cleaned properly and were wet. In a minute I got so mad and wondered why people over here were not working properly and that I should deserve the best if I am paying for it. Anyways, I went into the pool and after I swam for few minutes, my mind relaxed and suddenly a thought came to me. I remembered the last time I was in India; I had seen people relieving themselves in the open field. I also saw a few kids taking bath in one of the dirtiest road side I have every seen.

I thought to myself that here I am swimming in nice and clean environment, but still was mad at little things and then on the other side of the planet there are people suffering in utter poverty. I wondered if they would also enjoy their lives one day or will they perish in pain. I am already working on sending more to the charitable organisations in these countries that are working hard to make life easier for all that are suffering. You can easily find these kind of organisations online, try and help them if you can.
